Blackwood pet foods are proudly handcrafted in small batches at their manufacturing plant in rural Ohio. This small-batch, the slow-cooked method is a key to the brand’s image and is responsible for much of the success that they enjoy today. The company has also undergone a rapid expansion in recent years, purchasing several new plants in their area in order to feed the ever-growing demand for their product as it enters new markets across the country, and across the globe.
Blackwood Pet Foods is actually a subsidiary company belonging to the much larger Ohio Pet Foods and Southern Tier Pet Nutrition company. This is a third-generation, family-owned business that has been manufacturing high-quality pet food since its founding in 1978, in the town of Lisbon, Ohio.
Since their first start, the family-owned company has made growth a priority, spinning off Blackwood in 2011 and then purchasing the former Chenango Valley manufacturing facility the following year to meet demand. Today, they currently own three plants in the United States, as well as one that produces their canned products in New Zealand.
Quality of Ingredients
Like most premium-quality pet foods on the market, Blackwood makes use of only some of the highest quality ingredients available and avoids beef and beef by-products in all of their foods. Additionally, the meats they do use are chosen for their quality, not for their cost, which helps to ensure that only the finest sources of protein are selected to go into every bag of food.
Blackwood also promises to never use any soybean meal in their formulas and makes use of natural mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E) to preserve their foods. They also add proteinate minerals into every piece of kibble in order to help animal digestion. Finally, as mentioned earlier, all of their food is made in small batches, allowing for increased quality control, and is slowly cooked which not only helps to preserve many nutrients in the food but also makes it easier to digest and may even make them more appealing to our pups.

Dry Dog Food Product Line
Blackwood has a wide variety of dog foods that are available in both dry and canned forms. Each of the following on this list comes in a wide variety of flavors as well, with the exception of Ex-Pro, which as of now is only available in a chicken meal and rice formula.
The Original formula is, as the name suggests, the first blend that Blackwood put onto the market. The food comes in two different varieties based on your pet’s activity level, Active Dog for those with a need for more protein due to their active lifestyles, and Every Day for more relaxed pups. It has also been “supplemented with probiotics to aid digestion”, and is good for dogs of all life stages. The base protein of both formulas is chicken meal, supplemented with rice or oats depending on variety and have Vitamin B12 and D3 supplements, as well as biotin added in to help keep your dog looking and feeling great.
The Everyday formula is all made without any corn, wheat, or soy in any of its bags. This food also comes in several different formulas depending on the age of your dog, from puppy to senior, with the senior blend also doubling as a weight loss formula due to the lower levels of fat and protein in the mix. They also have pre- and probiotics added to aid digestion, and like the original formula also have a bunch of additional vitamin and mineral supplements to help make a fully balanced, well-rounded meal with each feeding.
The grain-free line, as expected, made without any kind of grain and is marketed towards animals who suffer from food sensitivities. This line also has the greatest amount of variety and makes use of a number of different, non-traditional sources of protein such as catfish, buffalo, and salmon as main ingredients. Interestingly, the formulas in this line make use of field peas instead of grains, but be warned! Some of these are also made with chicken meals, so if your pup has a problem with that kind of protein be sure to read the ingredients before buying a bag.
The latest entrant into the Blackwood family, Ex-Pro is made with the needs of performance and working dogs in mind. Crafted from “multiple super-premium protein sources,” the formula utilizes chicken meal as the main ingredient, supplemented by herring meal, chicken liver meal, porcine plasma, and egg to provide that extra protein bunch some dogs may need to get them through the day. Additionally, Ex-Pro has naturally sourced Omega 3 from fish oil added in, for an extra health boost.
