If you’ve ever had a dog who turns their nose up at mealtime, you know how frustrating it can be.

Take Jasper, a spirited but incredibly selective Border Collie I encountered in the clinic last month. His owner, bewildered and concerned, described how Jasper would often sniff his bowl and walk away, untouched. Picky eaters like Jasper aren’t just being stubborn; often, they’re signaling that something isn’t quite right—perhaps the taste, the texture, or even an underlying health issue that affects their appetite.

As a veterinary technician, I encounter this regularly. The struggle to find a diet that not only entices these picky eaters but also provides the essential nutrition they desperately need is a common and stressful plight among pet owners. They come in hoping for a miracle cure for their pet’s finicky habits, and often, the solution lies in understanding and catering to these specific needs.

This is where fresh dog food brands like Ollie can be a game-changer. They offer meals crafted with human-grade ingredients, designed to appeal to even the fussiest eaters. Fresh dog food often resembles the foods we ourselves might eat, which can be more enticing to dogs used to table scraps or who reject processed kibble. But does it really work? In this Ollie Dog Food review, based on my professional experience and personal observations, I’ve gathered some insights.

About Ollie Dog Food

Ollie Dog Food is a premium brand that specializes in providing fresh, human-grade meals tailored to the individual nutritional needs of each dog. Unlike traditional kibble, Ollie’s recipes are designed by veterinary nutritionists and are cooked at low temperatures to preserve nutrients.

Their meals are free from fillers, by-products, and artificial flavors, focusing instead on high-quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, and superfoods. Ollie delivers these customized meal plans right to your doorstep, offering convenience along with nutritional excellence.

Ollie was founded with a mission to provide dogs with the healthiest food possible while making mealtime hassle-free for their owners.

The idea was born out of a concern for a pet dog named Pancho, who wasn’t thriving on commercial dog food. His owner, along with a small team, began researching and working with veterinary nutritionists to create balanced, freshly prepared meals that met the specific dietary requirements of dogs. This initiative quickly transformed into Ollie, launched to the public to offer a better, healthier alternative to conventional dog food options.

As the brand grew, it gained popularity for its commitment to quality and transparency, establishing itself as a trusted name in the world of pet nutrition.

How Does It Work?

Ollie Dog Food simplifies the process of feeding your dog high-quality, nutritious meals with a straightforward, customer-friendly approach. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how it works:

Profile Creation

To start, you’ll visit Ollie’s website and create a profile for your dog. This profile includes essential details such as your dog’s age, breed, weight, activity level, and any specific allergies or dietary restrictions. This information helps Ollie customize the meals to fit your dog’s unique nutritional needs.

Based on the information you provide, Ollie will recommend a meal plan tailored specifically for your dog. You can choose from a variety of recipes, each highlighting different proteins like chicken, beef, or lamb. This step ensures that the meals not only meet your dog’s dietary requirements but also cater to their taste preferences.

Meal Preparation

Once you’ve selected your plan, Ollie prepares your dog’s meals using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Each meal is cooked gently to preserve nutrients and is then portioned according to your dog’s caloric needs. This method ensures that your dog gets the precise amount of food required for optimal health.

Packaging and Delivery

The prepared meals are packaged in environmentally friendly, refrigerated boxes and shipped directly to your door. Each package includes easy-to-follow feeding instructions and tips for storing the food to maintain freshness.

Feeding Your Dog

When your Ollie shipment arrives, you’ll find the meals pre-portioned and ready to serve. You can feed your dog directly from the package or warm the food slightly if your dog prefers. The transition to Ollie’s meals should be gradual, mixing it with your dog’s current food and slowly increasing the proportion over a week to ease their adjustment to the new diet.

Adjustments and Support

As your dog eats Ollie’s meals, you might find the need to tweak the diet—perhaps due to a change in weight, health, or preference. Ollie offers flexible subscription plans and excellent customer support to help make any necessary adjustments to your delivery schedule or meal plan.

Ollie Meal Plans

Clueless about what to choose? Let me give you a quick overview of the three plans available.

Fresh Meal Plans

The Fresh Meal Plans deliver meals made from real meat, vegetables, fruits, and grains, ensuring your dog receives top-notch, human-grade nutrition. These plans are perfect for those who want to provide their dogs with the highest quality diet. Ollie’s fresh meals are available as either a full plan, which provides 100% of your dog’s daily caloric needs, or a half plan, which supplements your dog’s current diet.

Mixed Meal Plans

The Mixed Meal Plans combine the best of both fresh and baked foods, offering a variety in textures and flavors, which can be particularly appealing to picky eaters or those looking for a more cost-effective option without compromising on quality. This plan allows dogs to enjoy the benefits of both freshly cooked meals and high-quality, minimally processed baked food.

Half Fresh Meal Plan

The Half Fresh Meal Plan is designed for pet owners who wish to combine Ollie’s fresh, human-grade meals with their dog’s current diet. This plan provides 50% of your dog’s daily caloric needs through Ollie’s meals, allowing for a balanced integration of new, high-quality nutrition with the familiarity and convenience of their existing food.

Taste Test

The moment I placed the bowl down, my dog’s usual indifference to mealtime vanished. He approached the bowl cautiously, sniffed, and then began to eat with a vigor I hadn’t seen in a while. It was clear that the fresh scent and the texture of the beef mixture were enticing to him.

As he continued to eat, I noticed that he was particularly keen on the chunks of sweet potatoes and beef, often nudging aside the peas and spinach for his preferred bites. This selective eating allowed me to see which ingredients he favored more, indicating a strong preference for the meaty and sweet components of the meal.

By the end of the meal, the bowl was completely clean—a rarity in our household. His enthusiastic eating and the subsequent lick of the bowl were testament enough to the meal’s palatability. It wasn’t just another dinner for him; it was a feast that he relished, leaving me satisfied with the decision to try Ollie’s fresh beef recipe. Watching him enjoy his food with such delight was reassuring, knowing that not only did the food taste good to him, but it also provided the nutrients he needs to stay healthy.

Ollie Dog Food Alternatives

Exploring other options in the fresh dog food market can help you find the best fit for your pet’s dietary needs and your lifestyle preferences. Here, we look at some notable alternatives to Ollie Dog Food.

Nom Nom

Nom Nom offers fresh, pre-portioned meals for dogs, formulated by veterinary nutritionists. Each recipe can meet specific dietary needs and preferences, similar to Ollie, but with its own unique recipes and ingredients.

The Farmer’s Dog

The Farmer’s Dog emphasizes human-grade, fresh dog food with recipes designed to meet the nutritional guidelines of The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). The meals are prepared shortly before shipping to ensure freshness. It provides a similar service to Ollie with an emphasis on natural ingredients.

Spot & Tango

Spot & Tango provides customized meal plans using fresh, whole ingredients. They offer both fresh and “UnKibble” options. They provide a choice that retains the benefits of fresh ingredients in a convenient form. This is in contrast with Ollie’s primarily fresh menu.

Ollie Dog Food Review: Pros and Cons

Deciding on the right dog food is crucial for your pet’s health and happiness. Ollie Dog Food offers high-quality, fresh meals delivered right to your door. Like any product, it has its pros and cons.

The Good

  • High-Quality Ingredients: Ollie’s commitment to human-grade ingredients ensures each meal packs nutrients to support a healthy diet. They focus on whole foods that promote better digestive health and more robust vitality in pets.
  • Customized Meal Plans: Meals are specifically tailored to accommodate the unique dietary requirements and preferences of your dog, with adjustments possible for age, activity level, and health considerations.
  • Convenient Delivery: The subscription service delivers freshly prepared meals directly to your door, eliminating the hassle of frequent pet store trips and ensuring a steady supply of quality food.
  • Health Benefits: Dogs fed with Ollie’s fresh ingredients often exhibit noticeable improvements in energy levels, coat health, and overall vitality, thanks to the superior nutritional content of the meals.

The Bad

  • Cost: Ollie’s premium meals come at a higher cost compared to more conventional dog food options like dry kibble, potentially putting them out of reach for some pet owners’ budgets.
  • Subscription Commitment: The service requires a commitment to a subscription model, which might not be ideal for those who prefer purchasing food on an as-needed basis or those hesitant about recurring expenses.
  • Storage Requirements: Since the meals are fresh, they require refrigeration, which could be a logistical challenge for pet owners with limited fridge space.
  • No Specialized Diets: Although Ollie provides meals tailored to general dietary needs, it lacks options for highly specialized medical diets that some dogs might require due to specific health issues, limiting its suitability for all potential customers.

Just don’t try to cancel it. I have been emailing them for 3 months and they just keep charging me. I have made it clear I want to cancel and they just talk about losing all my emails. I am done with this company.

    1. josabet gomez

I will not spend anymore time on the phone with them. I cancelled my subscription and they keep on charging me . I will not take the card out and send another email. They will not let you cancell online. Why is that ?? You can sign up on line but not cancel. This is not a reputable nor trustworthy company.

    2. Teresa

You cannot cancel via email. It says right on the website (that you ordered from) that you must contact Customer Service to cancel. Try that and see if it works.

  2. Shirleywachlin

I bought this food and am not happy with it! I put it in the refrigerator and after a few days the plastic cover bubbled up. I don’t think it’s goid to feed it to the dog. I wAnt a complete refund please!!

  3. Peter Lojac

I’ve been using Ollie for a year, it used to look like like the images on the website, now it looks like brown sludge that I dont want to feed my dog. Typical example of a company growing and sacrificing quality.

  4. Sudeeksha Murari

The food arrived all wet and soggy, not frozen like they said it would be. Definitely not risking with food like that. Threw away the whole batch and canceled.

  5. They had a half off first box coupon that enticed me to sign up. Apparently that is only for the “trial” box. I paid $36.79 for the first month and then it went up to $151.66 for the second month. When I called to find out why, they told me the discount is only on the trial box which is $73.58 normally. Their ad did not state anything about the price increasing to $151.66. You have to scroll down to the very last line on their site to access their TOS that states that they can change the price at anytime. My dogs loved the food but this is shady marketing tactics. Don’t fall for it!!

    1. The Woof Whiskers Staff

I personally thought the “half off first box” promo was straight to the point. I never assumed I would get half off any subsequent purchases.

      1. Interesting that Woof Whiskers has such a one-sided review to the positive . Would you care to disclose if there is any marketing relationship you have with the company or type of compensation whatsoever?

  6. Dayle Breault-Hagag

After using this service for several months, my two dogs gained substantial weight. The vet suggested a diet. I ordered my last shipment with the least caloric intake possible for both dogs. Thinking also I would get less food which as a NYC resident, takes up a lot of my freezer real estate. I received my latest shipment yesterday, which I had extended a full week due to overflow of food in the freezer, and I still have 9 days left. Well, while my Yorkie’s food did come in the usual 2 serving packets, which were smaller, my Chihuahia’s food came in a 8 serving packet, substantially larger and with so much food he would never eat it in 4 days. And they only advise keeping it for four days. Well, after speaking to two reps and a supervisor, they would not admit there had been a mistake in my delivery. So I am stuck with over two months of food, most of which will be thrown out. Please be careful with this company. They clearly do not care about their customers, as they were very quick to let me leave after no helping me with this matter.

  7. Amanda Griffith

I also had problems with the company. No notice of shipment so boxes came when I was out-of-town. Started a subscription when all I wanted was a box to see if dog liked it. Second box came again when I was out-of-town and now Ollie says my email notification went to my spam box. Is that MY problem. No refund. The dog likes the food but Ollie cannot work with you, the pup will need to get another brand.

I put my info in for my Dog a West Highland Terrier, The recommended a Beef based food. I have read not to feed West Highland Terriers beef do to creating skin problems and hair loss
I stopped there and did not order, if they would recommend Beef Based food, they do not know enough to be making Dog Food.

    1. The Woof Whiskers Staff

Hi Jon – Not all West Highland Terriers have allergies to beef, so it’s not fair to say all of the breed can not have beef. They can be prone to allergies, just like many other breeds. However you can easily select a chicken recipe or something else.

  9. Louis Tischler

What is the nutrient analysis of Ollie? You mentioned it on all but this food…ty

    1. The Woof Whiskers Staff

Louis, thank you for your comment and apologies for the oversight. We completed the analysis but never updated it into our write-up; we’ll get it added this week.
